Original Post So not wanting to spend $150 to replace differential fluid for both axles (need slightly 5.25pts, so need to buy 3qts to get the needed 2.625pts), what SAE 75W85 API GL-5 Gear and Axle Oil/Lubricant is good? …, It had auto trans fluid in it. I didn't think it was unusual because the suburban runs with that. What I learned from all the helpful folks is the D 300 is a gear driven design and uses gear oil (85w90).Suburban is chain driven and uses dextron. I just use the 80w90 from walmart. (Checking every other week cause it leaks out), Valvoline, Castrol, NAPA, etc. GL-5 gear lubes are all fine, there's not a gear lube sold at NAPA I wouldn't run. Personally I run Valvoline. A 75W-90, 80W-90, 70W-80, 80W-120, etc. are all fine... the axle is not fussy about its exact viscosity.
